You wake up in the middle of the night, swing your legs off of the bed and squish, you're immediately awake. Water is pouring across your floor and you just stepped in it, what do you do? Call Clarke Kent of course, but if you also know how to shut the water off at the source you might be able to save further damage and expensive repairs. Here are some of the common shutoffs that you will find in the Austin area.
The shutoffs on your lavatory, kitchen sink, or toilet, will look something like this. To shut off the water, turn it clockwise until it won't turn anymore. Sometimes stops will become calcified from hard water and will be difficult to turn off. Be firm but don't force it or it may break and then you'll have a real problem.
All houses have a water meter which is usually at the curb You will find a property owner's shutoff located between the city water meter and your house. Open the lid of the property owner's cutoff and turn the stop clockwise until it stops turning. Again, be careful to not force it or it may break.
The city shuts your water off using the stop located in the meter box between the water meter and the curb. They do not want you to use this and will fine you if you break it. In an emergency call the Clarke Kent Plumbing or city of Austin to turn your water off for you.
In this closeup of the city shutoff you can see the arrow that indicates whether the water is on or off. If the arrow is pointing toward the meter the water is on. If the arrow is pointing away from the meter the water is off. Remember the city does not want you to use their shutoff.
