How to shut off your water

Every drain in your house combines into one pipe before it exits your house. This means that if your sewer stops up every drain in your house stops up. When your sewer line gets full any water that goes down any drain in your house will back up into your tub, your toilet, or spill onto your floor.

However, if you can open your cleanout and give the sewer water someplace else to go until we can get there to clear your stoppage you can save yourself cleanup, mess, and damage to your house.

Sewer Cleanout

Most sewerlines have a cleanout which is where the drain tech will run his cable to unstop your sewer. It will usually be on the front or side of the house and you may already know where it is and what it looks like because you have to mow around it.

Cleanout Plug

Turn the cleanout plug counterclockwise carefully to open it which will let the sewer water drain onto the ground instead of your floors. It may make a mess in your yard but that's better than inside your house. You still won't want to put any water down the drains until we've unstopped your sewer because the pipe is full of water and could still back up into your house.
